We seek to build a space that honors the past while creating opportunities for the future through education, culture and community empowerment.

Texas Landmark

The oldest public school building in Lampasas

According to its Texas Historical Commission marker, the Lampasas Colored School is the oldest public school building in Lampasas and a reminder of the era of segregated education. A schoolhouse for African American students stood on this site in 1898, and the current two-room limestone building went up in 1923. The school closed in 1963, when all Lampasas students began attending school together.

The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2009.
